NEW BREMEN
New Bremen Glass Manufactory, Fredericktowne, province of Maryland, 1785-1802. Established by John Frederick Amelung for whom the town was named. Brought at least two dozen skilled workers with him from Germany. These men had a profound influence on glassmaking in America as they taught workers at New Bremen and moved on to other factories later. Amelung built homes for his workers and made "all sorts of glassware" in excellent quality. The engraved pieces were outstanding and help to establish identity of his ware. New Bremen was considered the most successful glasshouse up to that time.
